clavulanate (clavulanic acid)
Clavulanic acid is produced by Streptomyces clavuligerus. It has poor intrinsic antimicrobial activity, but is a suicide inhibitor of beta-lactamases produced by a wide range of Gram+ & Gram- microorganisms. It is well absorbed by mouth, but can be given parenterally. It has been combined with amoxicillin as an oral preparation (Augmentin) & with ticarcillin in a parenteral preparation (Timentin).
