chylomicron remnant

Remnant particle remaining after chylomicron metabolism. Characteristics: - retains most of the cholesterol esters found in the chylomicron - contains apolipoproteins: a) apo B48 b) apo E - size: 30-80 nm - density: between that of VLDL & IDL Pharmacokinetics: - rapidly metabolized in liver after entering circulation, generally in < 10 min with catabolism mediated by the apo E receptor (LRP)-mediated endocytosis & lysosomal degradation - estrogens stimulate chylomicron clearance
