cholecystokinin (CCK)/pancreozymin in plasma

Indications: 1) evaluation of pancreatic exocrine function 2) CCK plasma levels may also be useful for evaluation of: a) fatty food intolerance b) gastric ulcer c) post-gastrectomy states d) irritable bowel syndrome Specimen: 1) plasma, fasting 2) collect blood in special tube containing heparin & Trasylol 3) separate plasma in a refrigerated centrifuge within 30 minutes of collection 4) freeze immediately after separation of plasma Reference values: < 80 pg/mL Increases: 1) clinical disorders a) pancreatic exocrine disorders b) celiac disease c) levels up to 8500 pg/mL 2) pharmaceutical agents -> somatostatin completely inhibits secretion of CCK 3) levels increase following ingestion of food -> responses are more rapid in patients with duodenal ulcers & diabetes mellitus than healthy subjects
