Function: - regulates interactions between neurons & between neurons & muscle - associates with fibroblast growth factor receptor & stimulates tyrosine kinase activity to induce neurite outgrowth Compartment: - secreted - isoforms 1,2: cell membrane, transmembrane domain - isoform 3,4: cell membrane; lipid-anchor, GPI-anchor - isoforms 5,6: secreted Structure: - contains 2 fibronectin F3 modules - contains 5 Ig-like C2-type domains (immunoglobulin-like) Alternative splicing: named isoforms=6 Expression: - NK cells ~80 - 90% - activated T cells - brain, cerebellum - neuromuscular junctions - neuroendocrine tissues Pathology: - expressed in: a) myeloma b) myeloid leukemia c) neuroendocrine tumors d) Wilms tumor e) adult neuroblastoma - primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) stain negatively with antibody.
