CD35, complement component (3b/4b) receptor-1, C3b-1/Epstein Barr Virus [EBV] receptor or C4-binding protein

Function: - C3b receptor on erythrocytes - circulates with beta-globulin - same as C4-binding protein & proline-rich protein of chylomicrons - mediates cellular binding of particles & immune complexes that have activated complement Structure: - monomer - belongs to the receptors of complement activation (RCA) family - contains 30 Sushi (CCP/SCR) domains Compartment: membrane Expression: - granulocytes - macrophages - B cells - T cells ~10% - NK cells - erythrocytes - splenic follicular dendritic cells - eosinophils - glomerular podocytes - astrocytes (some) Polymorphism: - CR1 contains a system of antigens called the Knops blood group system - polymorphisms within the Knops blood group system are involved in malarial rosetting, a process associated with cerebral malaria - common Knops system antigens include McCoy (McC) & Sl(a)/Vil (Kn4, or Swain-Langley; Vil or Villien) - Sl(a-) phenotype is more common in persons of African descent & may protect against fatal malaria
