catalase (CAT)

Function: - occurs in almost all aerobically respiring organisms - protects cells from the toxic effects of H2O2 - promotes growth of cells including T-cells, B-cells, myeloid leukemia cells, melanoma cells, mastocytoma cells & normal & transformed fibroblast cells 2 H2O2 O2 + 2 H2O Cofactor: - Heme group - NADP Structure: - homotetramer - the N-terminus is blocked - belongs to the catalase family Compartment: peroxisome Pathology: - defects in CAT are the cause of acatalasemia
