catabolism
The process of breaking down complex biomolecules into simpler ones. For example, the breaking down of glycogen into CO2 + H2O. Catabolism is generally accompanied by release of energy in the form of ATP.
For more specific examples, see catabolic pathway.
A quantitative assessment of catabolism can be measured via calorimetry.
