carteolol (Cartrol, Ocupress)

Tradenames: Cartrol, Ocupress (ophthalmic) Indications: 1) ophthalmic - open-angle glaucoma - intraocular hypertension 2) oral - hypertension - angina pectoris Contraindications: Caution: 1) bronchial asthma 2) sinus bradycardia 3) 2nd & 3rd degree AV block 4) heart failure Dosage: 1) systemic: - start 2.5 mg PO QD, max 10 mg/day. 2) ophthalmic - 1 drop OU BID - apply gentle pressure to lacrimal sac immediately before & for 1 minute after instillation - avoid blinking for 30 seconds after instillation Tabs: 2.5 & 5 mg. Solution: 1%. Adverse effects: 1) irritation 2) burning 3) photophobia 4) bradycardia Mechanism of action: - non-specific beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist
