Captopril Prevention Project (CAPPP)

The study tested the effect of the ACE inhibitor captopril in 11,000 patients in Sweden & Finland. Patients received either captopril & a diuretic if necessary or diuretics, beta-blocker or both. During an average follow-up of 6 years, there were no difference in the group in the frequency of myocardial infarction or stroke. In a subset of 572 diabetic patients with diastolic blood pressure > 100 mm Hg Combined endpoint: - fatal stroke - myocardial infarction - sudden death Results: 1) combined endpoint less freatuent in captopril group adjusted relative risk 0.59 2) no difference in risk of stroke 3) myocardial infarction less frequent in captopril group adjusted relative risk 0.34
