Brugia malayi
Causative agent of filariasis.
Epidemiology:
- occurs primarily in China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Japan, Malaysia & the Phillipines.
Vectors:
1) Anopheles mosquitoes
2) Mansonia mosquitoes
3) Coquillitedia mosquitoes
Two forms distinguished by periodicity of microfilaremia
1) nocturnal form
a) more common
b) transmitted in areas of coastal rice fields
c) microfilaremia at night
2) subperiodic form
a) transmitted in forests
b) microfilaremia at all times with maximum in afternoon
Brugia malayi also infects cats.
Pathology:
- Adults found in lymphatics.
- Microfilaria found in blood.
Laboratory:
- Brugia malayi antibody in serum
- Wuchereria bancrofti+Brugia malayi antigen
- Microscopy:
- organisms have sheaths
