Borrelia hermsii

Epidemiology: - endemic in the western U.S., primarily in mountainous areas - transmitted by Ornithodoros hermsi soft ticks, which live in nests of squirrels & other rodents in coniferous forests at high elevations - ticks can pass on the bacteria within 30 seconds of feeding on its host [1] Pathology: - most common etiologic agent of tick-borne relapsing fever Laboratory: - Borrelia hermsii serology - Borrelia hermsii culture
