Bordetella pertussis

Pathology: - etiologic agent of pertussis (whooping cough) Laboratory: Bordetella pertussis culture - culture media: a) Regan-Lowe agar incubated at 36 C, examined for 6 days b) colonies presumptively identified with fluorescein- conjugated B. pertussis antiserum* c) B. pertussis will not grow on blood-free media d) B. pertussis usually requires 3-4 days to grow on chocolate agar Nitrite -; urease -; citrate - * cross-reactivity of antiserum with Legionella see pertussis see ARUP consult [3] Management: - macrolide - alternative: Bactrim
