Epidemiology: - may be isolated from humans after contact with guinea pigs, rabbits, dogs, cats or rodents - rare cause of respiratory disease in humans, predominantly in the immunocompromised Laboratory: - Bordetella bronchiseptica Ab in serum - Bordetella bronchiseptica antigen in specimen - Bordetella bronchiseptica DNA - culture - B. bronchiseptica grows readily on conventional media. - glucose oxidizer; MacConkey -; urease +; motility via lateral polytrichous flagellae
