bone morphogenetic protein 4; BMP-4; bone morphogenetic protein 2B; BMP-2B (BMP4, BMP2B, DVR4)
Function:
- induces cartilage & bone formation.
- also acts in mesoderm induction, tooth development, limb formation & fracture repair
- acts in concert with PTHLH/PTHRP to stimulate ductal outgrowth during embryonic mammary development & to inhibit hair follicle induction (putative)
- interacts with GREM2 (putative) & SOSTDC1
- part of a complex consisting of TWSG1 & CHRD (putative)
Structure:
- homodimer; disulfide-linked (putative)
- belongs to the TGF-beta family
Compartment:
- secreted, extracellular space, extracellular matrix
Expression:
- expressed in the lung
- lower expression in kidney
- present also in normal & neoplastic prostate tissues, & prostate cancer cell lines
Pathology:
- defects in BMP4 are the cause of
a) microphthalmia syndromic type 6
b) non-syndromic orofacial cleft type 11
