bone morphogenetic protein 7; BMP-7; osteogenic protein 1; OP-1; eptotermin alfa (BMP7, OP1)
Function:
- induces cartilage & bone formation
- may be the osteoinductive factor responsible for the phenomenon of epithelial osteogenesis
- role in Ca+2 regulation & bone homeostasis
- several peptides with N-termini starting at positions 293, 300, 315 & 316 are secreted
- interacts with SOSTDC1
- interacts with TWSG1 (putative)
Structure:
- homodimer; disulfide-linked
- belongs to the TGF-beta family
Compartment: secreted
Expression:
- expressed in the kidney & bladder
- lower expression in the brain
- expressed in the developing eye, brain & ear during embryogenesis
Pharmacology:
- available under the name Osigraft (Stryker)
- indicated in treatment of traumatic tibial fracture with non-union of at least 9 months duration in skeletally mature patients, in cases where autograft has failed or is unfeasible
