bisphenol A (BPA)
Uses:
- used in the production of polycarbonate plastics & epoxy resins that are commonly found in some baby bottles, water containers, linings of metal food cans, etc
Contraindications:
- FDA bans use in baby bottles & cups [7]
Pathology:
- report that people with higher urine levels of BPA are more likely to have diabetes & heart disease
- no association between urinary BPA level & type 2 diabetes [3]
- prenatal exposure to bisphenol A is associated with neurobehavioral problems in girls (but not boys) at age 3 years [4]
- enough evidence to ban BPA in food containers [6]
- association with increased urinary BPA & obesity in children & adolescents [8]
- high serum levels of bisphenol A in the first trimester of pregnancy is associated with increased risk of miscarriage [9]
- exposure increases risk of early-onset prostate cancer [11]
- higher urine levels of BPA are associated with increased risk of hypertension in the elderly [12]
Clinical trials:
1) 75 adults ate 12 oz of fresh vs canned soup for 5 days, then crossed over to the other soup for another 5 days [5]
- urine bisphenol A, collected on days 4 & 5 for each phase was detected in:
- 77% fresh soup
- 100% canned soup
- average urine bisphenol A concentration was ~23 ug/L higher after canned vs fresh soup [5]
- comment: a control group that did not eat soup at all would have been nice
2) handling of thermal-activated receipt paper without gloves increases bisphenol A levels in urine [10]
3) urinary BPA concentrations were higher 2 hours after elderly subjects drank soy milk from 2 cans versus 2 glass bottles
- systolic BP was ~4.5 mm Hg higher after 2 cans versus 2 glass bottles [12]
* cohort studies or case-control studies needed to investigate clinical outcomes of bisphenol A exposure
Notes:
- how to identify polycarbonate plastics; these usually have the number 7 in the recycling triangle, but 7 is a catch-all category...and not all 7s are polycarbonate
