Function: - catalyzes fat & vitamin absorption - acts in concert with pancreatic lipase & colipase for the complete digestion of dietary triglycerides - activated by bile salts containing a 7-hydroxyl group triacylglycerol + H2O diacylglycerol + carboxylate steryl ester + H2O sterol + fatty acid Structure: belongs to the type-B carboxylesterase/lipase family Alternative splicing: named isoforms=2 Expression: mammary gland & pancreas Pathology: - defects in CEL are a cause of mature-onset diabetes of the young type 8 with exocrine dysfunction (MODY8)
