Bartonella quintana (Rochalimaea quintana)

Etiologic agent of trench fever (WW II trenches in France), & peliosis hepatis & bacillary angiomatosis in HIV infected patients. Epidemiology: transmitted by body louse. Clinical manifestations: 1) incubation period: 3-38 days 2) HIV patients a) bacillary angiomatosis b) peliosis hepatis c) bacteremia d) endocarditis 3) prolonged fever in homeless patients Laboratory: - Bartonella quintana serology - Bartonella quintana DNA, Bartonella quintana rRNA Management: relapse may occur if not treated.
