Bartonella henselae (Rochalimaea henselae)
Etiologic agent of cat scratch disease.
Epidemiology:
- spread by the fleas of cats or cat bites or cat scratches
- cases have been reported from exposure to dogs & monkeys
Clinical manifestations:
1) incubation period: 3-38 days
2) HIV patients
a) bacillary angiomatosis
b) peliosis hepatis
c) bacteremia
d) endocarditis
3) cat scratch disease
Laboratory:
- Bartonella henselae serology
- Bartonella henselae DNA
Special laboratory:
- ophthalmoscopy if evidence of neuroretinitis [3] (image)
Management:
- doxycycline
- add topical & oral glucocorticoids for neuroretinitis [3]
