Pathology:
1) infections frequently result from disruption or perforation of mucosal surfaces
2) pelvic infections
a) septic abortion
b) tubo-ovarian abscess
c) endometriosis
3) peritonitis
4) appendicitis
5) hepatic abscess
6) bacteremia
a) may be secondary to abdominal abscess
b) may occur after gastrointestinal surgery
c) endocarditis
7) osteomyelitis
8) infectious arthritis
9) pulmonary infection
a) aspiration pneumonia
b) empyema
c) pulmonary abscess
Management:
1) metronidazole
2) ampicillin sulbactam (Unasyn)
3) clindamycin (5-15% of strains are resisitant)
4) imipenem
5) chloramphenicol
