Clinical manifestations:
- excessive sensitivity to rejection & social scrutiny
- timid & inhibited
- elderly:
- limited social contact may not provide adequate social support
Management:
- assess for & treat anxiety disorders, panic attacks, depression
- regularly-scheduled clinical contacts, rather than as needed
- case mangagers to solicit needs of avoidant patients
