avibactam/ceftazidime (Avycaz)
Indications:
- complicated intra-abdominal infections
- Avycaz used with metronidazole
- complicated urinary tract infections
Contraindications:
- caution in patients with renal impairment
Dosage:
- 2.5 g IV every 8 hours
- infuse over 2 hours
- 5-14 days of therapy
Vials contain Avycaz 2.5 gram, equivalent to ceftazidime 2 gram & avibactam 0.5 gram [3]
Dosage adjustment in renal failure:
- 1.25 g every 8 hours for CrCl of 31-50 mL/min
- 0.94 g every 12 hours for CrCl of 16 to 30 mL/min
- 0.94 g every 24 hours for CrCl of 6 to 15 mL/min
- 0.94 g every 48 hours for CrCl < 6 mL/min
Adverse effects:
- anxiety, constipation, nausea, vomiting
- seizures may occur in patients with renal impairment
- Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis & anaphylaxis may occur in patients with penicillin allergies [1]
Mechanism of action:
- cephalosporin, beta-lactamase inhibitor combination
