atypical fibroxanthoma
Etiology:
- radiation injury
- sun damage
- radiation therapy
Epidemiology:
- older patients
Pathology:
- neoplasm has anaplastic appearance
- highly atypical & pleomorphic cellular appearance
- may be a superficial form of malignant fibrous histiocytoma with a much better prognosis
- may be primary squamous cell carcinoma that fails to express keratin
Clinical manifestations:
- head & neck
- tumors arise rapidly (over a few weeks or months) in skin in which other skin cancers have been found & treated
Management:
- good response to excision
