atrial natriuretic factor/peptide/hormone (ANF/ANP/ANH) in plasma
Normal range:
- 20-77 pg/mL
Clinical significance:
- high ANP or BNP is associated with increased risk of major cardiovascular event
- high level of either peptide also predicts increased risk for heart failure & atrial fibrillation [2]
Increases:
1) congestive heart failure
2) cardiovascular disease with elevated cardiac filling pressure
3) cardiac volume overload
4) atrial pacing
5) paroxysmal atrial tachycardia
Decreases:
-> chemical interferences
-> prazosin, urapidil, xipamide
Specimen:
1) plasma (K2EDTA)
2) collect blood into pre-chilled tubes & deliver to the lab on ice
3) centrifuge in a refrigerated centrifuge & freeze plasma promptly
4) stable for 4 weeks at -25 degrees C
