atrial natriuretic factor/peptide (ANF, ANP)
Function:
- endogenous anti-hypertensive agent secreted from the cardiac atria
- derived from a larger precursor protein (NPPA)
Mechanism of action:
1) enhances salt & water excretion
2) blocks aldosterone & renin secretion
3) inhibits the action of angiotensin II & vasopressin
4) inhibits smooth muscle contraction
5) net effect is a decrease in blood pressure & blood volume
