Inherited tendency to develop type 1 hypersensitivity reactions.
1) triad of atopy
a) allergic asthma
b) allergic rhinitis
c) atopic dermatitis
2) anaphylactoid reactions to drugs
3) many urticarial reactions
Epidemiology:
- individuals are genetically predisposed to asteatotic dermatitis in the winter & miliaria-like reactions (prickly heat) in the summer
- more common among children who are born in the U.S. than among those who move here [2]
Genetics:
- associated with polymorphisms in PLA2G7
