aseptic meningitis

meningitis, not bacterial meningitis or fungal meningitis [1] Etiology: - viral meningitis - meningitis of unknown etiology or known not to be of infectious etiology - medications - NSAIDs, antibiotics, intravenous immunoglobulin - malignancy - systemic inflammation Clinical manifestations: - see meningitis Laboratory: - see meningitis Management: 1) also see viral meningitis 2) uncomplicated a) symptomatic treatment b) fluids c) pain control: acetaminophen d) rest 3) severely ill a) ceftriaxone (Rocephin) 1 gram every 12 hours b) cefotaxime (Claforan) 1 gram every 8 hours c) addition of ampicillin 2 grams every 6 hours 4) if uncertain, hospitalize & observe for 24 hours 5) repeat lumbar puncture if indicated
