antoxidant-response element (ARE)

Mediates transcription of genes in cells exposed to oxidative stress via the transcription factor Nrf2. Genes encoding antioxidant enzymes as well as phase 2 detoxification enzymes appear to contain the ARE. Activation of genes containing the ARE is induced by electrophilic compounds & phenolic antioxidants. Nrf2 upregulates genes containing the ARE perhaps as a hetero- dimer with small maf proteins lacking the transcriptional activation domain [1]. maf proteins including c-maf & small mafs (G-maf) appear to down-regulate genes containing the ARE [2].
