Benzocaine 1.4%, antipyrine 5.4% in glycerin* Indications: 1) temporary relief of ear pain a) otitis media b) otitis externa c) swimmer's ear 2) facilitation of ear wax removal - cerumen impactation Contraindications: sensitivity to ester-type local anesthetics Dosage: 1) 2-4 drops TID/QID PRN 2) insert saturated cotto pledget 3) for ear wax removal, instill drops TID-QID for 2-3 days 10 & 15 mL bottles. Adverse effects: (< 1%) 1) irritation 2) burning 3) hypersensitivity Mechanism of action: 1) anesthetic 2) decreased permeability of neuronal membrane to Na+ resulting in blocking of nerve impulses * New formulation substitutes acetic acid & U-polycosanol 410 for glycerin; price increases from $2 to $150 [4]
