anti-Purkinje cell antibody (anti-Yo)

Found in women with paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration. Etiology: - associated with: 1) ovarian carcinoma 2) fallopian tube carcinoma 3) endometrial carcinoma 4) breast carcinoma 5) lymphoma (less frequently) NOT found in: 1) men with paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration 2) women with gynecologic cancer without neurologic syndrome Laboratory: - Purkinje cell Ab in body fluid - antibody directed against 34 & 62 kD leucine-zipper proteins. - neuronal antigen: -> Purkinje cell cytoplasmic proteins a) p34 CDR34 b) p62 CDR62-1 c) p62 CDR62-2 Special laboratory: - exploratory laparotomy indicated for women with anti-Yo & without laboratory-proven cancer
