anterior cerebral artery

The smaller of 2 terminal branches of internal carotid artery (the middle cerebral artery is the larger branch). The anterior cerebral artery is divided into 2 parts: A1: proximal to the anterior communicating artery A2: distal to the anterior communicating artery Origin: internal carotid artery Branches: A1: (proximal) -> anteromedial central arteries a) proximal medial striate arteries b) supraoptic arteries c) anterior perforating arteries d) preoptic arteries A2: (distal) 1) distal medial striate artery 2) medial frontobasal artery 3) polar frontal artery 4) two large terminal branches a) pericallosal artery b) callosomarginal artery Distribution: 1) supplies medial portions of frontal & parietal lobes & corpus callosum 2) branches supply medial portion of orbital surface of the frontal lobe including olfactory bulb & tract Anastomoses: -> the right & left joined by anterior communicating artery Course: 1) passes anteriorly, loops around the genu of the corpus callosum 2) passes in the interhemispheric fissure on either side
