anterior cerebral artery
The smaller of 2 terminal branches of internal carotid artery (the middle cerebral artery is the larger branch). The anterior cerebral artery is divided into 2 parts: A1: proximal to the anterior communicating artery A2: distal to the anterior communicating artery
Origin: internal carotid artery
Branches:
A1: (proximal)
-> anteromedial central arteries
a) proximal medial striate arteries
b) supraoptic arteries
c) anterior perforating arteries
d) preoptic arteries
A2: (distal)
1) distal medial striate artery
2) medial frontobasal artery
3) polar frontal artery
4) two large terminal branches
a) pericallosal artery
b) callosomarginal artery
Distribution:
1) supplies medial portions of frontal & parietal lobes & corpus callosum
2) branches supply medial portion of orbital surface of the frontal lobe including olfactory bulb & tract
Anastomoses:
-> the right & left joined by anterior communicating artery
Course:
1) passes anteriorly, loops around the genu of the corpus callosum
2) passes in the interhemispheric fissure on either side
Properties
GENERAL: artery
RELATED: anterior cerebral artery syndrome

FORM: anterior cerebral artery
BRANCHES: pericallosal artery
