ankyloglossia (tongue tie)

Etiology: - X-linked cleft palate with ankyloglossia Pathology: - lingual frenulum with excessive attachment to the bottom of the tongue Clinical manifestations: - presents in infancy - bottom of the tongue is attached to the floor of the mouth - restricts movement of the tip of the tongue Complications: - rarely associated with speech impairment or dysphagia Management: - surgery is seldom necessary - frenulotomy
