angiostrongylosis

Infestation with nematode of genus Angiostrongylus. Pathology: - eosinophilic meningitis Clinical manifestations: - ascending paresis of varying severity, mainly effecting the limbs & bladder (dogs) - in severely affected animals the cranial nerves & central nervous system are affected (dogs) - variable severe lumbar hyperalgesia (dogs) [1] Management: - prognosis: recovery occurs in all but the most severe cases, - corticosteroids & supportive care facilitate recovery & lessen the residual neurological dysfunction (dogs) - antihelmintics worsen outcome (dogs) [1]
