Epidemiology: 1) vectors of Ehrlichia equi are ticks: a) Ixodes scapularis b) Dermacentor variabilis 2) most frequently encountered in months of April through September 3) may infect dogs & cats Pathology: - small obligate, intracellular coccobacillus that infects granulocyt - etiologic agent of anaplasmosis Laboratory: - Ehrlichia equi serology - Anaplasma phagocytophilum serology - Anaplasma phagocytophilum antigen - Anaplasma phagocytophilum DNA - Anaplasma phagocytophilum culture Notes: - Anaplasma phagocytophilium is identical to Ehrlichia equi & Ehrlichia phagocytophilia [2]
