AIDS-defining condition
Conditions listed in AIDS surveillance case definition:
1) malignancies
- Kaposi's sarcoma, especially < 60 years of age
- CNS lymphoma, especially < 60 years of age
- other non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
- invasive cervical cancer
2) Infection
a) Pneumocystis pneumonia
- Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP)
- Pneumocystis jirovecci pneumonia
b) cytomegalovirus (except liver, spleen, lymph nodes)
- CMV retinitis (with loss of vision)
c) Mycobacterial infection
- Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC)
- disseminated
- involvement of organ(s) other than
- lung
- hilar or cervical lymph nodes
- skin
- Mycobacterium kansasii (same as MAC)
- Mycobacterium tuberculosis (extrapulmonary > pulmonary)
- other extrapulmonary Mycobacteria
d) candidiasis
- esophagus
- bronchi, trachea or lungs
e) coccidioidomycosis, disseminated (extrapulmonary)*
f) cryptococcus (extrapulmonary)
g) cryptosporidiosis, chronic intestinal (> 1 month duration)
h) Herpes simplex
- chronic ulcers > 1 month's duration
- bronchitis, pneumonia or esophagitis of any duration
i) histoplasmosis, disseminated (extrapulmonary)*
j) isosporiasis, chronic intestinal (> 1 month duration)
k) progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML)
l) Salmonella septicemia, recurrent
m) Toxoplasmosis of the brain
n) pneumonia, recurrent
3) other (may be infectious)
- encephalopathy (HIV-related)
- wasting syndrome
*sites other than cervical or hilar lymph nodes
Other conditions not included above:
1) bacillary angiomatosis
2) candidiasis
a) oropharyngeal
b) vulvovaginal (perisitent, frequent or poorly responsive to therapy)
3) cervical dysplasia -> carcinoma in situ
4) constitutional symptoms lasting > 1 month
a) fever > 38.5 degrees C
b) diarrhea
5) hairy leukoplakia, oral
6) shingles (Herpes zoster) involving 2 distinct episodes or more than 1 dermatome
7) idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)
8) Listeriosis
9) pelvic inflammatory disease, especially complicated by tuboovarian abscess
10) peripheral neuropathy
