African American Study of Kidney Disease & Hypertension (AASK)

Study characteristics: 1094 African Americans with reduced creatinine clearance & hypertension Groups: - 2 blood pressure* goals: a) 102-107 mm Hg b) 92 mm Hg * mean arterial pressure 3 antihypertensive agents - metoprolol, ramipril, or amlodipine Results: 1) risk of developing diabetes significantly lower with ramipril than with metoprolol or amolodipine (RR=0.53) 2) group with lower blood pressure goal more likely to develop diabetes
