acquired polycystic kidney disease

Etiology: 1) chronic renal insufficiency 2) end-stage renal disease (ESRD) Epidemiology: - up to 50% of patients receiving dialysis for more than 5 years Clinical manifestations: 1) fever 2) pain 3) hematuria 4) infection 5) erythrocytosis Radiology: - annual renal ultrasound to screen for renal cell carcinoma in patients who are candidates for renal transplantation Complications: 1) adenomas in 5-10% 2) adenocarcinomas in 1.5% - 30-fold increased risk of renal cell carcinoma with acquired form [1] Management: - tolvaptan approved for use in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease is not useful in acquired form [1]
