third degree burn
Etiology:
- see burn
Pathology:
- full thickness epithelial burns with damage to the underlying dermis
- 3rd degree burns destroy nerves making them insensitive to pain
Clinical manifestations:
1) skin charred with a leathery surface insensitive to pain or touch
2) surface will not blanch because blood vessels are thrombosed
Complications:
- scarring occurs
- see burn
Management:
1) generally requires skin grafting
2) months may be required for healing
3) consider referral to burn center
