3-donor embryo
Procedure:
- assisted reporduction technology consistng of a mother's oocyte, a father's spermatocytes & mitochondia from a 3rd party donor
Clinical significance:
- mitochondria from a 3rd party donor replace defective mitochondria in the oocyte cytoplasm during in vitro fertilization
- spermatocytes from the father do not donate mitochondria during reproduction
- all mitchondria in offspring are derived from mother
Notes:
- critics fear advent of 'designer babies'
