2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG); 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate (2,3-BPG)

Levels regulate affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen; greater levels of 2,3-DPG results in diminished hemoglobin oxygen affinity. 2,3-DPG may lower hemoglobin oxygen affinity by a factor of 26. Formation of 2,3-DPG reversibly catalyzed by bisphosphoglycerate mutase.
